We're happy to have welcome "Work the World" among our sponsors this year at Medicalfinals. They specialise in organising exciting and structured overseas clinical placements for Medical students and others seeking clinical experience.

If you are considering overseas options for your elective, or you just want to gain some valuable work experience, Work the World organises projects for medical students in some of the most stunning and welcoming countries in the world—Ghana, India, Tanzania and Zanzibar.

Elective placements are organised on an individual basis and structured according to each students’ objectives. Our programmes are structured to offer a complete experience, giving the opportunity to work and travel off the beaten track and also become part of a community of like-minded people by living in one of our Work the World houses.

As well as ensuring security, the house acts as a comfortable base from which each placement is managed.  The in-country teams have developed strong links with the medical communities in all our destinations – it is a great help to have someone local at hand who has personally arranged each placement and who knows the medical environment.  It is also great to know there will be a home cooked meal and a group of friendly faces to home to.

Our destinations are carefully chosen to offer a wide range of cultures, environments and placements as well as excellent travelling opportunities both at the weekends and after the placements finish. With options of exploring the rainforests of southern Ghana, going on safari in Tanzania, relaxing on the white sandy beaches in Zanzibar, or visiting the stunning temples and tiger reserves of the Western Ghat Mountains in south India, you’d never be stuck for ideas.

The Ghana programme offers a real insight into how traditional attitudes and economic limitations impact on healthcare in the developing world. There are various opportunities to gain clinical experience in regional hospitals, smaller district hospitals/clinics or on outreach initiatives such as HIV/Aids or Dentistry

We currently work with seven hospitals and clinics in Tanzania, offering a range of settings and opportunities.  The hospitals range from the main referral centre in the area, Mount Meru, through to smaller regional hospitals and clinics which cover the full range of medical services.

In Zanzibar, we are partnered with Mnazi Mmoja Hospital, the only referral hospital on the island. The hospital also acts as a primary healthcare centre for much of the local population, so you can be sure to see a wide variety of cases at all levels. We have opportunities for placements in most major fields of medicine and surgery, as well as nursing, dentistry and physiotherapy.

The projects in India are slightly more diverse than in Africa as we do not work with specific hospitals, but have a formal agreement with the Kerala State Government.  Because of this, placement opportunities are effectively endless.   It is possible to undertake your elective in large busy general hospitals, smaller semi-rural district hospitals or small specialised clinics.

This is just a brief summary of what is available through Work the World! Is there something specific you are after? Let us know your areas of interest and we have such strong links with the medical communities in the countries where we work that we can normally accommodate any preferences that you might have!  Check out our website...
